About 40% of drivers are uninsured

Nearly 60% of the two wheeled-vehicles and 40% of motors using the Indian roads do not have an insurance cover. Insurance companies have often alerted regulators to enforce legislation which imposes compulsory insurance on all vehicles using public roads. To put an end to this situation, the Ministry of Transport and Highways is planning to introduce fines from 2 000 to 4 000 INR (30 to 60 USD) against any offender.

Uninsured drivers are a danger to third parties and other road users who have very little chance to be compensated in case of accidents.
