American winter storm could cost more than 2.5 billion USD to insurers in 2014

According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), the insured losses caused by 2014's winter storms could exceed 2.5 billion USD.

Robert Hartwig, president of III, has said that such an assessment would make of 2014 "the fourth-costliest year on record for winter storm losses", knowing that for 20 years the annual average of this type of event has been 1.2 billion USD.

Note that winter storms account for 6.4% in the grand total of insured losses caused by natural disasters between 1994 and 2013. They are closing a podium composed of tornadoes (36%) as well as hurricanes and tropical storms (41%).
