Health insurance plan specifically designed for low-income populations

The National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) and the insurer Co-operative Insurance Company (CIC) have launched a health insurance plan specifically designed for low-income populations. Contributions are adapted to the resources and consumer habits of the day labourers and rural populations. This product is designed for the 100 000 members of the Kenyan Wives' Funding Trust (KWFT), an association specializing in micro credits.
For a premium of 3 600 KES (55 USD), the insurance policy shall cover costs pertaining to sickness, maternity and HIV infection for all family members. The policy does not include any exclusionary clauses for lingering diseases.
Because it enables women heading families to ensure the health of their children, the product is regarded as a genuine tool of development.
