Heavy damage due to Hurricane Matthew

After having ravaged Haiti, Hurricane Matthew continued its progress toward the Amercian Southeast Coast.

Rated category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson, the cyclone caused over 1 000 casualties in Haiti, destroyed more than 29 000 dwellings and affected about 350 000 people.

In the affected area of the United States, we already count at least 18 dead persons. More than two million houses were without electricity, 3 900 people were evacuated and 4 500 flights canceled .

The commercial and tourist activity remained stopped until the remoteness of the hurricane, seen on Sunday 9th October.
The Bloomberg agency estimates the cost of the economic damages at more than 25 billion USD.

Insured losses would, in turn, range between 4 and 6 billion USD. The majority of the losses would be caused on the American soil, given the low insurance penetration rate in Haiti.
