Motor insurance is more expensive in Italy compared to the rest of Europe

The Insurance supervisory authority (Isvap) has revealed that the average motor insurance price in Italy amounts to 407 EUR (503 USD) compared to 172 EUR (212 USD) in France, 222 EUR (274 USD) in Germany and 229 EUR (283 USD) in Spain. The progression of motor tariffs in Italy over the 2002-2009 period is of 17.9% whereas in the rest of Europe it is of just 7.1% in average. In some Southern regions in the country, the premium required from young motorists or new driving license holders could amount to 7000 EUR (8662 USD) for a medium-engined car. The association of insurance companies (Ania) says that such tariffs are accounted for by the high frequency of claims.
