Special Women, Oumou Niang Touré, board member, general manager of Askia Assurances

After obtaining a Bachelor's degree in business law in Dakar and two under-graduate diplomas in specialized studies (DESS) in international trade and maritime transport issued by the Université de Nantes, France, Oumou Niang Touré got acquainted with the insurance business in June 1998, when she joined Alliance Assurances.

In July 2003, she was appointed general manager of the company. She was then the first Senegalese woman to hold such a position.

Following this baptism of fire, she joined a few years later Askia, a newly established company on the market. She entered the firm not only as a shareholder but also as deputy general manager from August 2008 to September 2010.

In October 2010, she was alone in complete control of the company and became general manager. Thereafter and thanks to the support obtained from her board of directors, she took steps to develop Askia on the local market, opening a huge undertaking based on the necessity to hire, train, organize, control, seek business, underwrite, all of which in an environment characterized by fierce competition.

As exciting as it is, working within the company does not prevent O. N. Touré from being present on many fronts. She is, among others, vice president of the federation of Senegalese insurance companies (FSSA) and board member of Sen Assurance vie.

At the national level, the general manager of Askia is a member of Senegal’s national governing council where she is serving as the national commissioner in charge of economic governance.

Outside business, O.N. Touré is a very active member in the civil society. She is vice-president of the association of Senegalese lawyers. As an active female liberationist, this mother of four has campaigned to promote the status of women in society. She has on numerous occasions, led and moderated training seminars on women's leadership.
