The new highway code generates strikes

The adoption of the new highway code triggers anger among road transport professionals. The bill approved by the Chamber of Deputies has generated riots and unrest. Unhappy, lorry drivers have blocked access to the Casablanca port for two days, seriously disrupting traffic. Taxi drivers' trade unions and associations have voiced disapproval of the measures advocated by the new code such as demerit point driving licence, training and driver seat belt use. It is worth noting that Moroccan roads are among the deadliest in the world. In 2008, 66 852 road accidents have been listed claiming the lives of 4 044 people and seriously injuring 12 670.
