May 02, 2016

A study presented at the general assembly of the European Geosciences Union, held in early April 2016 in Vienna, has shown that natural disasters which occurred since the early twentieth century, caused the death of more than 8 million people and about 7 000 billion USD in economic damage worldwide.

Floods have proved to be responsible for 38.5% of the total damage cost. Earthquakes and storms have been respectively involved in 26% and 20% of losses.

Volcanic eruptions, forest fires, heat waves and droughts share the remaining 15.5%.
