Rising oceans: risks reassessed upwards

November 01, 2019

oceanAccording to the latest Amercian study by "Climate Central", published in the journal "Nature Communications", the old scenarios for rising oceans are under-assessing the risks. According to the new patterns put forward by Climate Central, 300 million people in coastal areas would be affected by rising sea levels by 2050. Two-thirds of the populations at risk live in Asian countries such as China, Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand.

The new models bring more precision to topographical data. They do not change the old parameters of sea level rise. Still according to the journal, the altimetric data, provided free of charge by NASA and used in previous studies, have a significant margin of error. The altitude of the soil in relation to sea level can be confused with that of trees, roofs, etc.

Finally, nearly 100 million people live in areas below sea level.
