2017, a record year as regards aviation safety

According to the annual report of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) published on 16 August 2018, the year 2017 was the safest year in almost 50 years regarding air travel security. The figures provided in this report relate to passenger and cargo air transport operations worldwide.

According to statistics, nine air crashes resulted in 67 deaths worldwide in 2017, with an average of 4 deaths per accident. The crash of Turkish Airlines Flight 6491 was the deadliest event causing 39 victims.

For companies of the agency member states, the 2017 toll is positive. No fatal accidents were recorded. It's a record in terms of aviation safety compared to the previous years.

As a reminder, the average number of deaths per accident amounted to 8 during the 2007-2016 period. The deadliest catastrophe was the crash of the Boeing 777 of Malaysia Airlines leading to the death of 298 people.
