7.4 billion USD in damages for the 2016 weather events

The weather events that occurred between June 1, 2015 and April 30, 2016 triggered a lot of damage in the United States. Economic damage amounts to 13.05 billion USD, 7.4 billion USD of which is covered by insurers and reinsurers.

Approximately 7 billion USD are caused by storms. These figures show that not only just 56% of the losses are insured, but also that the current year may be particularly harmful for the insurers and reinsurers covering natural catastrophes.

Since 2008, the insured claims resulting from storms amounted in average to 10 billion USD per year.
