Air transport, “2017, the safest year, ever”

According to the statistics of ASN (Aviation Safety Network), 2017 has been the safest year of air transport since 1946 when the first air crash report was published.

During the past year, 27 000 passenger planes crossed the skies carrying 4 billion people.
The number of events and victims has never been this low with a total of ten fatal accidents and 44 deaths. Half the claims pertain to planes carrying passengers whereas the second half relates to cargo transport.

The deadliest event, which claimed the lives of 12 people in Costa Rica, took place on the last day of the year, on December 31, 2017. According to ASN, the year 2017 witnessed one deadly accident for 7.6 million flights.

The report, disregarding accidents involving military planes, does not include the June 7, 2017 air crash of Burmese army plane which claimed the lives of 122 people. By including military air crash events, the toll climbs to 24 accidents and 230 deaths.
Despite this increase in loss ratio, 2017 maintains its title as the safest year in aviation history.
