Amendment of the traffic law in South Africa

alcohol carThe South African parliament has implemented the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) Amendment Act.

The amendment, which will come into force on 1 July 2021, aims to reduce the number of fatalities on the country’s roads as well as the cost of insurance.

The new law sets zero alcohol limits and a demerit system that suspends driving licences for three months for every demerit point above 12.

Drivers found to be driving with any alcohol in their blood and who have accumulated more than 12 demerit points will not be able to report their claims to insurance companies.
