An earthquake similar to that of Amatrice could cost up to 60 billion USD in Switzerland

The earthquake that occurred in August 24, 2016 in Italy has revived worries about the occurrence of a similar disaster in Switzerland.

"An earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale, could cause between 40 and 60 billion USD in direct economic damage in Helvetia" said the foundation for structural dynamics and anti-seismic engineering.

According to the same source, earthquake safety is inadequate in Switzerland. It is only in 1989 that the country introduced modern anti-seismic building standards.

To overcome these shortcomings, the Council of States, Jean-René Fournier, presented a motion to the Federal Assembly of the Swiss Confederation, to introduce a compulsory earthquake insurance.
Out of the 26 Swiss cantons, 20 have so far accepted this request.
