Bad weather causes major damage in Tunisia

On June 5, 2017, torrential rain fell down on Tunisia, causing considerable damage, particularly in the north and the center of the country. In Tunis, several floods were reported with many vehicles washed away. Road infrastructure was partially damaged.

Bad weather also caused losses in some agricultural areas. The rains drowned the farms at a time cereal farmers were preparing to harvest crops.
Despite the significant economic losses, the impact of these events on insurers will remain limited because of the low insurance penetration rate and of the absence of a system for managing the natural disaster risk.

As a reminder, the Tunisian authorities are currently studying the possibility of introducing a compulsory insurance against natural catastrophes risks.

The other Maghreb countries (Algeria and Morocco) have already introduced a compulsory insurance scheme against natural events.
