China to tackle health insurance fraud

In China, a nationwide operation to combat insurance fraud has led to the dismantling of 251 criminal groups in six months. The arrests in-volved 3 819 suspects. By the end of September, health insurance funds were recovering embezzled sums worth 230 million CNH (35.52 million USD).

In the first eight months of 2021, the National Healthcare Security Ad-ministration (NHSA) has imposed sanctions on 212 500 healthcare fa-cilities, almost 50% of the inspected establishments. As a result, health insurance companies will recover CNH 8.8 billion (USD 13.6 billion).

Last week, 47 employees, including the Director of a hospital in Sichuan province (South China), were arrested. They are suspected of falsifying medical records to defraud the national health insurance scheme. The amount of the fraud is estimated at 10 million CNH (1.55 million USD).
