Covid-19: British variant detected in Tunisia
On 22 February 2021, Tunisia recorded its first case of B.1.1.7, a British variant of Covid-19. Since the person infected with the variant has not travelled abroad, the transmission of the virus can only be local.
The National Observatory of New and Emerging Diseases fears a rapid spread of the new virus that could lead to a 3rd wave of the disease.
Since the beginning of the health crisis until 4 March 2021, 234 231 Tunisians have been affected by Covid-19 which has led to the death of 8 047 people.
For the record, the country has not yet started its vaccination campaign. The first vaccine batches are expected to arrive by March 2021.
