Covid-19: Europe expects 700 000 additional deaths by spring 2022

covid-19In the last few weeks, Europe has turned into the hub of the pandemic. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the fifth wave of Covid-19 could lead to 700 000 additional deaths on the old continent.

This would increase the death toll to 2.2 million by the spring 2022. The WHO also expects a heavy strain on intensive care units.

The Delta variant, the loosening of sanitary measures and the non-vaccination are three factors that favour the spread of the pandemic. Although 67.7% of the European population is vaccinated, there are huge discrepancies among countries. The lowest vaccination rates in Europe are recorded in Moldova (22%), Bulgaria (22.2%) and Bosnia-Herzegovina (25.5%).
