Covid-19: Europe expects 700 000 additional deaths by spring 2022
In the last few weeks, Europe has turned into the hub of the pandemic. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the fifth wave of Covid-19 could lead to 700 000 additional deaths on the old continent.
This would increase the death toll to 2.2 million by the spring 2022. The WHO also expects a heavy strain on intensive care units.
The Delta variant, the loosening of sanitary measures and the non-vaccination are three factors that favour the spread of the pandemic. Although 67.7% of the European population is vaccinated, there are huge discrepancies among countries. The lowest vaccination rates in Europe are recorded in Moldova (22%), Bulgaria (22.2%) and Bosnia-Herzegovina (25.5%).
