Covid-19: new treatment

laboratoryOn Tuesday, 20 July 2021, Japan has approved the U.S. treatment for Covid-19 known as REGEN-COV in the United States. This makes Japan the first country to approve the drug.

Phase III studies show that the treatment, developed for mild and moderate forms of the coronavirus, reduces hospitalizations and deaths by 70%. It also reduces the duration of the symptoms by four days.

According to the Swiss pharmaceutical group "Roche", in charge of the development, manufacturing and distribution of REGEN-COV outside the United States, the drug is effective against the Delta variant, a form of the virus that will soon be the most widespread in the world.

It should be noted that three existing drugs are reportedly 100% effective against Covid-19:

  • Darapladib, a drug for atherosclerosis,
  • Flumatinib, a treatment for cancer,
  • A drug against HIV, whose name was not specified.
