Earthquake: Insured losses estimated between 3 and 8 billion USD

According to the first estimates of the American company US EQECAT, the damages caused by the February 27, 2010 earthquake could amount to sums between 3 and 8 billion USD. Economic loss is valued between 15 and 30 billion USD, that is, four times as much as insured losses. The overall turnover of the Chilean non life market reached 4 billion USD per year, while the share of the earthquake's premium is only a tiny fraction of that amount.
