Electric cars to worry insurers

Electric carA study carried out by AXA on the Swiss market has revealed that luxury electric cars and SUVs (Sport Utility Vehicle) cause 40% more accidents than petrol cars. Results that could prompt insurers to change motor policies and tariffs.

According to crash tests dated August 2019, the increased risks of accident for this type of vehicle is due to several factors: fast acceleration of the vehicle, flammable nature of batteries and excessive confidence in the assistance system which slows down responsiveness in dangerous situations.

In Switzerland, electric cars currently account for less than 1% of the country's car fleet. The increasing number of these vehicles is causing concern among insurers who will have to cope with a rising motor experience.
