EU: Towards launching a map of natural hazards

With more and more recurrent natural catastrophes, the European Commission will launch, towards the end of 2018, a "Database of risks" aimed to estimate the damage caused by these events.

This project, which is part of the development of the European Civil Protection Mechanism, will collect information and relate it to historical data in order to develop an explicit and global mapping of risks.

According to Michael Szönyi, Director of the EU Flood Resilience Program, «It is hard to attribute a particular event or a statistical year to climate change in itself. But if we consider longer-term trends, we clearly see the gap widening between total economic loss and insured losses".
