Evolution of the main reinsurers: 2013 - 2017 period

Between 2016 and 2017, that is in one year, the global reinsurance market reported a 6.52% premium increase. Analysis of this progression rate showcases the weight of major reinsurers.

While the overall market’s growth does not exceed 6.52%, the top five report a 19.94% increase, three times as fast as that of the entire market. The top twenty reinsurers combined report an 18.95% growth, that is less than the top five.

Beyond the twenty-first ranking, progression for the remaining reinsurers is negative, set at -53.46%. For these reinsurers the written premiums have clearly decreased in a single year.

With the exception of Swiss Re and transatlantic Holdings, which recorded a decrease in their premiums’ volume between2016 and 2017, all reinsurers involved in our study achieved a growth in their premiums’ collection.

Main evolutions of reinsurers between 2016 and 2017

At the end of 2017, on the top of the table, there are the five major groups. Munich Re regains the lead it had lost in 2016 and Swiss Re ranks second position after having sustained a 2.38% decrease of its premiums.

The Swiss reinsurer is followed by Berkshire Hathaway which gains two positions. Hannover and Scor which lost one position.
