Financial institutions, favourite targets of cyber-attacks

According to a report published by Africa Cyber Security 2016, cyber-attacks have cost no less than 2 billion USD for African companies. Both Kenya and Tanzania are East African countries that are hardest hit with losses estimated respectively at 171 million and 85 million USD. Uganda comes third with 35 million USD in losses.

The banking activities top the list of high risk sectors. Attacks against financial institutions are often staged in complicity with staff members of the establishments concerned. Information theft regarding customers’ accounts and change of names for insurance beneficiaries stand among the main targets.
