Atlas Magazine makes an assessment of the losses that have market the year 2013¹.

Natural catastrophes

Indonesia: January 18: floods claim the lives of 41 people and cause damages estimated at 311 million USD Australia:
- January 18: bush fires in the south east of the country, 100 million USD in insured losses
- January 28: floods, 6 killed and 314 million USD in insured losses
June
United States: May 20: a powerful Tornado hits Oklahoma City, 24 people killed. Reconstruction costs range between 2.2 and 6.4 billion USD.
July
Europe: June: serious floods in Central Europe, damages amount to several billions of US dollars.
September
United States: September 19: a series of tornadoes in the Midwest and Illinois, seven killed and considerable material damages
December
Philippines: November 8: typhoon Haiyan, huge economic losses but limited insured damages

United States: The 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico: agreement between BP and American authorities

Saudi Arabia: April 6: fire at Riyad’s Haram Plaza hotel, damages estimated at 10.6 million USD United States: April 15: Boston attacks, 3 killed and 144 people injured
April 17: explosion in fertilizers’ factory in Texas, 14 killed and 200 injured, damages estimated at 100 million USD
June
Bangladesh: April 24: collapse of five textile factories, 1 127 people killed Italy : May 7: accident in Genoa port. A container ship causes the collapse of control tower. Nine people killed.
July
Canada: July 5: derailment of a 72-tank-car train in Quebec, 47 people killed France: July 12: derailment of a passenger train at Brétigny-sur-Orge, seven people killed

Italy: September 16: the sinking of “Costa Concordia” cruise ship caused losses of 826 million USD

Kenya: September 21: terrorist attack in Westgate Shopping Mall, Nairobi, 67 people killed, 240 injured and 76 million USD of insured losses.

Other losses

France: Late July: big jewelry theft in Cannes, the loot is estimated at 136 million USD
