Global insurance in 2016

According to the latest Sigma report, the global insurance market grew by 3.1% in 2016 against 4.3% in 2015. In the previous year, the premium volume amounted to 4 732 billion USD. Non-life insurance increased by 3.7% at 2 115 billion USD while the life insurance business grew by more than 2.5% for a premium volume of 2 617 billion USD. These moderate evolutions are due to the economic slowdown in mature markets.

Insurance showed, nonetheless, a significant growth in emerging countries, where life premiums increased by 17% and non-life premiums by 9.6%.

With 1 350 billion USD in premiums, the US market ranks first worldwide, followed by Japan (471 billion USD) and China (466 billion USD).
