Gulf of Nigeria: upsurge in acts of maritime piracy in 2018

According to International Maritime Bureau (IMB), Nigeria has reported 22 acts of maritime piracy during the first three months of the year 2018. Out of the 11 ships that were targeted by shots, eight were attacked on the shores of Nigeria including an oil tanker with a capacity of 300 000 tons. In 2017, 20 attacks were reported in the region.

IMB is currently working with the Nigerian authorities on ways of improving surveillance over coastal regional areas.
