Insurance fraud: the attempt ends in an 18-month imprisonment

Michael Darcy (36 years) was sentenced by the Dublin Criminal Court to 18 months imprisonment for insurance fraud. The scammer had simulated a theft of jewelery valued at 49 000 USD and filed a claim with AXA Insurance, three days before the expiry of his home insurance contract.

Having had doubts about the theft declaration, the insurer asked his client to provide proof that he had actually possessed the jewels in question. Darcy quickly presented a statement of a bank account under his name showing that he had at that time the sum of 57 819 USD in his account, an amount that would be sufficient to pay the jewels. In addition, when underwriting the insurance policy, Darcy had presented the valuations provided by a Dublin goldsmith indicating the value of the ring and bracelets in question.

After detailed checking, AXA Insurance discovered that all the papers were fake.
