Insurers request access to autonomous vehicle data in the event of an accident

According to representatives of the insurance sector gathered on May 24, 2018 at the conference organized by the French insurance federation (FFA) and the VEDECOM Institute, the texts that currently govern motor insurance would be favorable to autonomous vehicles.

However, the search for liability following an accident caused by an autonomous vehicle is complicated. It must be proven whether the vehicle is in autonomous mode or not at the time of the accident. According to the president of the FFA: "any delegation of driving must involve the presence of a data logger".

To speed up procedures, insurers request access to autonomous vehicle data, free of charge and without the driver's approval. A proposal for a revision of the motor insurance directive has been presented by the European commission to further protect victims of accidents and to improve the rights of insured persons.
