Japan earthquake: Insured losses estimate

Japan earthquakeOn 16 March 2022, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit northeastern Japan. The quake was felt as far away as Tokyo, where hundreds of thousands of homes were cut off from electricity.

According to the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA), the focus of the earthquake was located 60 kilometers deep in the Pacific Ocean near Fukushima, ravaged by an earthquake and tsunami on 11 March 2011. At least one person was killed and more than 160 injured.

A tsunami warning was issued but was lifted a few hours later.

Aon estimates that the disaster may lead to significant insured losses.
