Mandatory gun liability insurance in San Jose

GunOn 25 January 2022, the San Jose City Council passed an ordinance to mandate gun liability insurance in the city. The ordinance also mentions the introduction of a fee for owning a gun.

In addition to covering both physical and property damage, San Jose's city council hopes to reduce the rate of gun-related accidents and increase user responsibility. The insurance policy will include restrictive clauses or rate reductions that would encourage owners of rifles, revolvers, etc. to be more alert (keeping weapons in safes, taking gun safety classes, etc.).

In the United States, 40% of households own at least one gun. Every year, 40 000 gun-related deaths are reported in the country.
