Maritime piracy, again on a rising trend

After a peaceful period of five years, maritime piracy acts have shown up again. They proliferated in 2015 with 246 acts and in 2014 with 245.

According to a report of the International Maritime Bureau, we counted in 2015, in the only region of Southeast Asia, 147 acts of piracy, up by 4% compared to 2014.

In Africa, 35 incidents were recorded, 24 in the Indian subcontinent, 31 in the Far East and 9 in the Americas.
However, no attacks were reported in the Gulf of Aden, formerly considered as the first risky area.

Bulk carriers were the first target of pirates with 86 reported cases, followed by chemical tankers (62) and container ships (30). In 2015, only one passenger ship was attacked.
