More than 14 000 road accidents during the first six months of 2016

The Algerian national prevention and road safety centre launched in August 2016 an awareness campaign dedicated to car drivers.

According to preliminary statistics, 14 238 accidents occurred in the first half of 2016 resulting in 1 919 deaths and 21 290 injuries. Young drivers are involved in 54% of accidents.

In total, the under 40 year-old group is responsible for 67% of tragedies on Algerian roads. In Algeria, 95% of road accidents are due to human error and mainly to speeding (3499 cases), decreased attention and vigilance (1450 cases), dangerous overtaking (1123 cases), the condition of the vehicles (394 cases) and the condition of some roads.

Its should be reminded that according to authorities, the annual cost of road accidents for families and the Algerian state is more than 3 billion USD, not counting the fiscal loss represented by the damage to rolling stock.
