Motor insurance in Tunisia: total compensations in 2021

BUATIn 2021, the motor insurance indemnities reached 670.8 million TND (232.788 million USD), that is 5.4% higher than in 2020.

During the same year, the Tunisian insurance market, all activities included, has recorded an 11% increase in benefits and claims paid as well as an 8% rise in its turnover set at 2.776 billion TND (963.36 million USD).

The Tunisian Automobile Bureau (BUAT) has handled 606 claims for accidents caused by foreign vehicles in Tunisia.

The office has also settled 573 cases for accidents for which Tunisian motorists are responsible on the national territory and 22 claims for accidents occurring outside the national territory with vehicles insured with Tunisian companies.

The organization has thus disbursed a total amount of 5 million TND (1.7 million USD) of motor claims in 2021. Created in application of article 114 of the Insurance Code, the BUAT is a professional association in charge of the application of the conventions concluded with the foreign countries adhering to the international insurance card schemes.

According to the World Bank, the road mortality rate per 100 000 inhabitants is of 16.5 in Tunisia. This rate, one of the lowest in Africa, remains high compared to that of European countries or the Middle East.
