Nearly 30% of Indians do not hold a health insurance

health insuranceSurvey conducted by NITI Aayog, a policy think tank, shows that nearly 30% of Indians do not have a health insurance policy. The reasons behind this lack of coverage include expensive benefits and shortcomings of the current health insurance scheme.

The current health insurance plan (AB-PMJAY), developed in September 2018, and government programs provide full hospitalization coverage to 50% of the population. About 20% of citizens are also covered by a social system and personal health insurance.

In order to achieve universal health coverage, the report highlights the need to develop a comprehensive, low-cost insurance product for the remaining 30% of uncovered people.
