New York insurers entitled to access customer's privacy on social networks

social networksIn New York, insurers will soon be able to scan social networks and use new data sources to estimate customer risks. The State services issued a preliminary note of the rules on the use of data by insurers. These laws may come into force in the coming months.

The preliminary note established, among other things, limits on the use of social networks. In order to be able to collect information, insurers are called upon to prove that the use of data does not discriminate certain customers (on the basis of race, social class...).

These new rules' objective is to organize insurers' practices. Indeed 20 companies would already use social networks to assess risks and detect frauds.

A survey conducted by New York authorities with 160 life insurers has revealed the existing collaboration with companies specializing in the sale of data regarding the insured (photos, device used, …). These illegal practices would come to an end with the introduction of the new regulations.
