The first steps of OGAR group date back to 1938 with the opening of the agency France Cote d'Afrique. In 1973, French insurer la Préservatrice established a general delegation in Libreville, whose portfolio was the basis for the establishment of OGAR in 1976.

After several acquisitions of local portfolios including those of the groups Drouot and Foncière Assurances, the company has gradually parted ways with its initial founders to become fully independent in 2001. Currently, the group is entirely controlled by Gabonese interest groups.

To meet CIMA requirements, the company divided its life and non-life activities, establishing in 1988 a company specializing in life insurance, OGAR Life. Non life operations were then grouped within OGAR Non Life.

First Gabonese insurer and second one in the CIMA zone behind ARC of the Congo, OGAR Non Life reported a turnover of 57.767 million USD, in addition to 15.774 million USD of the life company. Leading the local market, the group recently created OGAR International to expand its operations to the rest of Africa with a particular interest in neighboring countries.
