Regulators tighten supervision over insurance agents

Supervisory authorities wish to strengthen oversight of agents which represent several insurance companies. This decision comes in response to the critics against the sale methods adopted by these intermediaries, with customers being directed to insurers that offer the highest commissions. Since 1996, insurance agents are authorized to represent many insurers. The authorities intend to open the market to competition by allowing brokers to distribute policies.
