Road accidents weigh heavily on the Senegalese economy

traffic accidentsSenegal's Insurers Association (AAS) has revealed that the compensations paid for motor related losses exceed 13 billion FCFA (22.6 million USD) per year, that is nearly 7.5% of the total turnover. In 2018, the latter amounted to 174.359 billion FCFA (304.03 million USD).

Motor insurance accounts for more than 20% of the total written premiums with more than 50% of losses directly related to traffic accidents. According to ASA's executive officer, road accidents cost Senegal more than 74 billion FCFA (128.7 million USD) annually, that is 1% to 2% of its gross domestic product. As for the human toll, almost 600 deaths are reported each year.
