Road safety in Algeria: new preventive measures

AlgerOn February 8th, 2020 the Algerian government has adopted new road prevention measures. The scheme is based on four components:

  • Legal and administrative: Withdrawal, as a precautionary measure, of the licence of the driver reliable for an accident, particularly for public and school transport. Tightening of coercive measures, criminalisation of irresponsible and reckless behaviour,...
  • Road infrastructure: renovation of roads and generalisation of public lighting and radar,...
  • Road inspection: enhancing road sign control operations and strengthening mixed units and unannounced inspections throughout the country,...
  • Educational and informational: reinforcing preventive actions, enhancing awareness campaigns, distributing educational and teaching materials for schoolchildren and road users,...

For the record, the Algerian car fleet amounted to 6 418 212 vehicles in 2018, that is 4.15% more than in 2017.
