South African insurers: lack of control on international markets

South African insurers, Old Mutual, Liberty, MMI or Sanlam have invested heavily on the continent by setting up subsidiaries and representations offices there. This strategic move has allowed them to get better acquainted to the African reality.

Some products designed for South Africa have limited success beyond their borders and premium collection time is much higher. These constraints mean that the profits made abroad are lower than those reported in South Africa.
