The conquest of space weighs heavily on insurers

satelliteAlthough not occurring frequently, incidents related to the space conquest generate a high cost for insurers. On 1 September 2018, SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket exploded with the Amos-6 satellite on board, insured at 200 million USD. This sum represents 20 years of pre-launch insurance premiums.

On 17 November 2020, a space accident of a different kind was covered by insur-ance and reinsurance companies. The Vega launcher deviated from its trajectory. It was carrying two satellites, Taranis and SEOSAT-Ingenio, which it was to put into orbit. The mission failed. The damage for the two satellites, excluding the cost of the rocket, reached 369 million USD.

The highest damage for space insurance involves the loss of the Vega rocket carrying the Falcon Eye 1 satellite in July 2019. The insured sums amounted to 416 million USD.
