The European Commission approves the Aon-Willis merger

Aon Willis Towers WatsonAfter an in-depth review, the European Commission has approved (under conditions), on 9 July 2021, the 30 billion USD acquisition of Willis Towers Watson by Aon.

This approval is conditional upon Aon's compliance with a series of commitments, including the sale of core elements of the WTW business to the broker Gallagher, in particular the activities of Gras Savoye France.

Aon will also have to sell its entire pension consulting and pension management activities in Germany as well as its German investment solutions business to a suitable buyer.

Even though the Brussels-based institution has granted its approval, the merger between the two brokers is still blocked by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).
