The Fed reports a profit of 17.7 billion USD thanks to AIG’s rescue

The Federal Reserve System, United States’ central bank posted a profit worth 17.7 billion USD following AIG’s rescue which started in 2008. This announcement has been made upon the cession of the last stocks in its possession. Keeping the insurer afloat required 180 billion USD of public funds. The American treasury has gradually taken over the FED in this rescue operation becoming the bankrupt group’s main bailer and still holding 53% of the capital that will be paid up progressively. The FED will, therefore, recover 24.2 billion USD. The insurer’s current stock price will certainly enable it to draw a comfortable capital gain.
