The lack of insurance: a wide-spreading phenomenon

AccidentIn France, like in almost any other country, it is compulsory to subscribe to a motor liability insurance policy for every motor vehicle travelling on the highway.

Despite this obligation, more than 800 000 drivers are uninsured. In 2018, it was estimated that one over 50 vehicles is uninsured.

According to the latest report published by the guarantee fund for compulsory property insurance (Fonds de Garantie des Assurances Obligatoires), 31 000 of road accidents in 2018 were caused by uninsured drivers. They are mainly youth under the age of 30. During the current year, the fund has disbursed 119 million EUR (136.11 million USD) of compensations for uninsured claims. This number is still increasing by 32% over a five-year period.

Not only does such a traffic offence causes huge economic losses for all the insurance business, but it also imposes a heavy financial burden upon the parties at fault in an accident who have limited means to cover such expenses.
