The sinking of the Nyerere ferry makes 224 deaths

At least 224 people died on Friday, Sept. 20th, 2018 in the sinking of the Nyerere ferry south of Lake Victoria. Only 41 passengers were rescued.

According to the Tanzanian government, overloading the ferry is behind this disaster. At the time of the tragedy, the boat with a capacity of 100 passengers was carrying nearly 300.

Tanzanian President John Magufuli has promised that the guilty would be punished. The first sanctions concern those responsible for the management of the shipping company who were fired.

In 1996, the sinking of the Bukoba ferry on Lake Victoria caused the deaths of about 800 people.
