A Canadian changes gender to pay a cheaper motor insurance

August 01, 2018

A 20-year-old Canadian from Alberta has legally changed his gender to be provided with a discount on his motor insurance premium. Instead of paying an annual contribution of 4 517 USD, the young man currently pays, thanks to his new marital status, a premium of 3 423 USD, which is 1 094 USD less.

According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, men under the age of 25 are more likely to cause road accidents than female drivers of the same age. It is on the basis of this finding that female Canadians pay lower automobile premiums than men (-5%).

For the past three years, Alberta has been among provinces where citizens can legally change gender without providing proof of genital surgery. A simple letter from a physician or an accredited psychologist indicating that the person identifies as a different sex is enough to change his gender. This initiative aims to simplify administrative formalities for the transgender community.
