A massive landslide struck the vast Rubaya mining site in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on 28 January 2026. The site spans dozens of square kilometres.

The provisional death toll stands at no fewer than 200, with around 20 people injured, making it one of the deadliest mining disasters in more than a decade.

The mining town of Rubaya accounts for an estimated 15 to 30% of global coltan production, a mineral essential to the electronics industry.

Thousands of artisanal miners work at the site each day, often in precarious conditions and without adequate safety measures.

According to preliminary information from the authorities, part of the hillside collapsed on 28 January 2026, followed by a second landslide the following day.
