Extreme cold and snowstorms in Canada

February 19, 2025

Extreme cold and snowstorms in CanadaCanada has been facing a series of winter storms since 13 February 2025, triggering high winds and heavy snowfalls, particularly in Toronto, the country's most densely populated city, and in Montreal.

Quebec saw record snow depths, with up to 72cm recorded in 4 days in Montreal. Temperatures plunged to -49°C in many parts of the country.

The blizzard caused several flight cancellations and delays, and forced schools to close. In response, the authorities urged residents to avoid commuting and to work from home. On 17 February 2025, a DeltaAirlines plane completely overturned during a hard landing at Toronto airport.

With 80 passengers and crew members on board, the plane flipped upside down in the middle of a snow-covered runway, leaving 18 people injured.

While the causes of the accident have yet to be fully determined, passenger accounts suggest that the crash was due to a combination of a bad landing and extreme weather conditions.
