Ali Elmezayen, a 45-year-old California resident, was sentenced on 11 March 2021 to 212 years in prison for drowning his two autistic sons. A. Elmezayen had deliberately driven the family car off a wharf at the Port of Los Angeles.
The man had planned to kill his family members in order to collect life insurance money. He waited until 9 April 2015, after the two-year contestability period wrapped for the insurance policies was over, to commit the crimes.
The death benefit paid by the insurers amounted to over 260 000 USD.
The Egyptian criminal invested the money in real estate purchases in his home country as well as a boat.
From July 2012 to March 2013, Ali Elmezayen had underwritten life insurance policies for his family with eight different companies, for more than 3 million USD.
He used to pay 6 000 USD per year in premiums while declaring an annual income of less than 30 000 USD to the tax authorities.
The federal charge only deals with the series of financial crimes. Elmezayen is yet to be prosecuted for the murders themselves.
